The cardinal’s song
Muggy air
Soggy ground from too much rain
These scents combine to push a memory
Of a St. Augustine morning
But it dissipates at the aroma
I watch a car pull out of the parking lot
Cross the road to another
Then cross back
Half hidden in the hedgerow
A woman drags on a cigarette
Her smoke mixing
With the smoke of wildfires
That has drifted down from Canada
And hangs heavy in the air
