Documenting No Kings 3 With Sketches

Do this thing you have always wanted to do. Be there, experience and document the event. It is a dream. IT IS THE DREAM! Be bold! Be Free! Gonzo Journalism!

No Kings 3 was my first protest. Well, that’s not entirely true. In 5th or 6th grade my classmates and I protested that we had to learn dancing in gym class. Some of the kids even made signs. Our protest lasted until the gym teacher when and got the principal. The principal was scary, and we quickly fell into line. literally.
My mom, who is in her mid 80’s has protested almost every Saturday since this regime came to power. Me, I’m not a protester. Crowds, possible confrontation, they both make me profoundly uncomfortable. However, I’m still holding on to a childhood dream of being a reporter and when I learned about illustrated journalism I was enthralled. I wanted to try it.
The day before the No Kings 3 protest I was trying to not talk myself out of going and wrote in my journal; Do this thing you have always wanted to do. Be there, experience and document the event. It is a dream. IT IS THE DREAM! Be bold! Be Free! Gonzo Journalism!
Despite some parts giving it their all, I was unable to talk myself out of it. Saturday morning I gathered my sketching supplies and headed to the protest.
My hands were literally shaking throughout the first two sketches. Then a man came up and asked to take a look, said the drawings were good. This settled my nerves, and I spent the next hour or so absorbed in the day, until my hands got too cold and the crowd began to disperse.
