Constellations

I

Gray fading light
February snow falling

Under the gas station awning
A man washes his car window

Chink

I replace the pump
Climb into the car’s warm cocoon

II

Parallel ribbons of red
Rain droplets shattering on the hood
Darkening fields and dimly lit homes
Glide past streaked windows

III

Through this cracked and dirty window

I can see over the high brick wall
To a manicured lawn

The light shifts
Then shifts again

Creating black and white photographs
Out of the shadows

IV

In the Utah desert
Under a breadth of stars
I fall in love with who I am
